Not to be confused with Moth.
Mothron is a rare, powerful Hardmode, post-Plantera flying enemy that spawns during the Solar Eclipse event. Mothrons can pass through all blocks and attack by chasing after the player or aligning themselves horizontally with them before lunging towards them at varying speeds, inflicting heavy contact damage depending on their velocity. Occasionally, it lands on blocks to lay several Mothron Eggs that will spawn Baby Mothrons if they are not destroyed in time, much like Lepus(3DS version).
It is one of the few entities that can be detected by the Lifeform Analyzer or its upgrades. Mothron requires 25 kills to be awarded completion of its Bestiary entry and corresponding banner, as opposed to the usual 50 kills.

Notes
- Be careful not to let Mothron lay its eggs on a single block in the air as sometimes it can despawn without dropping anything.
- As of version 1.4.1, Mothron only spawns after Plantera has been defeated, but it will not drop any items until after all three mechanical bosses have also been defeated in the current world.
- This situation is impossible to encounter in regular gameplay, but may be relevant when using certain mods or externally edited worlds.
Tips
- The basic steps:
- Prepare an open, flat arena.
- Equip a good set of wings, and either Hallowed armor with Helmet (which gives a ranged bonus and ranged critical strike chance), Chlorophyte armor with Helmet (which gives a ranged bonus, and each crystal leaf projectile will deal 100 damage), or Shroomite armor. Melee players should equip Turtle armor or Beetle armor, as their high defense stats can allow them to shrug off a lot of damage from Mothron's charge attacks.
- The Gelatinous Pillion can also be useful as an alternative to wings, as the diagonal speed of the mount exceeds Mothron's speed when flying down vertically or flying up vertically.
- Ranged and magic weapons are ideal. The Piranha Gun's projectile damages any enemy it comes in contact with while still latched to the target (The Piranha Gun can kill it in 20–25 seconds in Classic Mode, and in 40-45 seconds in Expert Mode). Good ranged options also include the Venus Magnum, Snowman Cannon, Chain Gun, and Tsunami, while good magic options include the Blizzard Staff, Razorblade Typhoon, Nightglow, Stellar Tune, and the Crystal Serpent due to its splash projectiles.
- For melee users, the Death Sickle is very effective against Mothron if they had obtained one during an earlier Solar Eclipse, as it can continuously deal damage while it lays eggs and keeps it at bay for a few seconds. Other strong options include yoyos, the Scourge of the Corruptor, Vampire Knives, True Night's Edge, and True Excalibur. Melee players should prioritize killing Mothron, as the Broken Hero Sword it drops can be used to craft the Terra Blade. Using flasks such as the Flask of Venom or Flask of Ichor is highly recommended.
- Mothron is most vulnerable when laying its eggs, as it remains completely motionless for a few seconds.
- When dashing, it is vulnerable to more damage as it rams into the player's projectiles rapidly. Weapons such as the Crystal Serpent especially benefit from this.
- The best thing to do is to kill the eggs before they hatch, as the Baby Mothrons can be very annoying to kill. It is also useless to farm them, as they drop no loot.
- Another strategy is jumping down a Hellavator and shooting up, however the effectiveness of this can vary greatly class-to-class and strategy-to-strategy.
Trivia
- Mothron is a reference to Mothra from the 1961 Japanese kaiju film Mothra.[1] The subtle change in its name follows the trend of Terraria enemies' and bosses' names ending with the suffix -ron, such as Skeletron, Duke Fishron, and Pigron.
- If the Eclipse finishes, or all players die, Mothron floats up to the sky and despawns, similar to the Martian Saucer and Pumpkin/Frost Moon event bosses. In addition, it becomes invincible after the end of the Eclipse.
- Similar to the Ice Golem, Sand Elemental, and the Dreadnautilus, Mothron is not a boss or mini-boss even though it has stats comparable to a boss. This is evidenced by its lack of a boss health bar, the fact that it drops a banner, not a trophy, and the fact that it does not drop a relic in Master Mode.
- Technically, Baby Mothrons should be in their larval state at birth.
- Mothron acts similarly to Lepus(3DS version), in the sense that it lays eggs that spawn weaker versions of itself.
- Grox The Great presumes that Mothron drops the Broken Hero Sword because it ate the sword.[2]
Bestiary entries
- Mothron: "A behemoth of an insect attracted to the eerie anti-glow of a solar eclipse. With a rapid gestation period, it multiplies quickly."
- Baby Mothron: "The creatures which burst from the eggs laid by mothron can be as deadly and as relentless as their daunting mothers."
