After you make any exam request, a “W” will appear in your online account under the Current Exam Results. This stands for “Waiting for Score”. This will be replaced with an exam score on score release day.

The CPA Exam is scored on a scale from 0 to 99, and you must score a minimum of 75 to pass each section. However, the score is not based on a percentage of correct answers. Contrary to popular belief, the exam is not graded on a curve. Instead, it employs a criterion-referenced scoring system. This means your CPA exam scores reflect your performance against a predetermined standard of knowledge rather than how you performed relative to other candidates.

The CPA Exam has a low pass rate because there is a lot of material covered in the exam and much of it is complex. Studying with a trusted review provider can dramatically increase your chances of passing.

Candidates have an 18-month window to study and sit for the four-part exam once they have been approved as a candidate. The first-time pass rate for all sections is less than the Bar Exam. Some statistics put the number of candidates who pass all four sections the first time between 13.9 percent to 20 percent.

There is no limit as to the number of times you may repeat a failed section. You may take any unpassed section of the CPA Exam year-round. Your only restriction is waiting to receive your score from a previous attempt of the same section.

CPAs who are licensed in Illinois are required to have 120 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) credit during each three-year reporting cycle. After your application has been accepted, you will receive a Notice to Schedule (NTS) from NASBA. You will only receive one NTS, even if you applied to multiple sections.
