Beginning Dec. 1, Pacific Rim will be available to stream on Peacock. Directed and co-written by Guillermo del Toro, Pacific Rim is set in a future where humans are at war with gargantuan sea monsters who've emerged from an alternate dimension through a portal in the Pacific Ocean. To combat the monsters, humanity unites to create gigantic humanoid mechas known as Jaegers which are controlled by two co-pilots whose minds are joined by a mental link. Hunnam -- best known for his leading role in FX's Sons of Anarchy — portrays a washed-up Jaeger pilot in the movie who is called out of retirement and teamed with rookie pilot Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) as part of a last-ditch effort to defeat the monsters.

To this day, Pacific Rim is the most expensive movie ever directed by del Toro, with a budget of around $200 million. Luckily, the sci-fi movie was a major commercial success, grossing over $411 million at the box office. Reviews were also largely positive, which led to the development of a sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising, in 2018. Steven S. DeKnight took over directing duties for Uprising, though del Toro was still on board as a producer. Despite boasting a cast that included John Boyega, Scott Eastoowd, Adria Arjona, and Cailee Spaeny, Pacific Rim Uprising failed to land with audiences, with the sequel grossing less than $300 million worldwide.

Pacific Rim Is Getting a Prequel Series
Three years after Pacific Rim Uprising, Netflix released an anime-inspired continuation series titled Pacific Rim: The Black, which ran for two seasons and 14 episodes. The Black is so far the latest installment in the sci-fi franchise, although a future series is currently in development. Announced in August 2024, Legendary Entertainment is working with Eric Heisserer on a prequel series set in the Pacific Rim universe.
"Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself," Legendary Television president Jason Clodfelter said in a statement at the time. "We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular Pacific Rim universe. We are certain their vision will make for an enthralling expansion to Legendary’s beloved franchise."

What's Charlie Hunnam Been Up to Since Pacific Rim?
Hunnam didn't return for Pacific Rim Uprising or Pacific Rim: The Black, with the 2013 movie marking his only appearance in the franchise. Instead, the actor went on to star in another del Toro movie, 2015's Crimson Peak, as well as the Guy Ritchie blockbuster, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2018), and the first entry in Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon franchise. The actor will next be seen in two hotly-anticipated streaming series: Prime Video's Criminal, based on the comic book of the same name; and Monster Season 3, in which Hunnam portrays real-life killer Ed Gein.
Pacific Rim arrives on Peacock on Dec. 1.
